A stormwater drain that backs up during heavy rain can quickly turn a manageable maintenance job into water entering a garage, pooling against the house or flooding a driveway. Knowing how to unblock a stormwater drain safely can help with simple surface blockages, but it also helps to recognise when the problem is underground and needs professional drainage equipment.

Stormwater systems carry rainwater away from roofs, gutters, driveways and paved areas. They are not designed to handle leaves, mud, garden waste, oil or building debris. When water cannot move freely through the system, it will usually find the lowest available path – often towards buildings, landscaped areas or neighbouring properties.

Start by finding where the blockage is

Before reaching for tools, wait until it is safe to inspect the area. Do not work around fast-moving water, open pits hidden by floodwater or electrical hazards. Put on gloves, sturdy enclosed footwear and eye protection, particularly if you are opening a pit that has not been checked for some time.

Start at the obvious collection points: roof gutters, downpipes, channel drains, driveway grates and stormwater pits. If a grate is covered by leaves and mulch, the restriction may be at the surface and easy to clear. Remove loose debris by hand, using a rake or small scoop, and place it in a garden-waste bin rather than washing it further into the drain.

Then run a hose at a moderate flow into the drain. Watch what happens. If water drains away steadily, the blockage may have been limited to the grate or pit. If it rises quickly, sits in the pit or comes back out through another drain, the obstruction is likely farther down the line.

It is useful to check more than one point. For example, if one downpipe overflows but the nearby pit remains empty, the downpipe or its connection may be blocked. If several drains back up at once, the issue may be in the main stormwater line, a crushed pipe or the legal point of discharge.

How to unblock a stormwater drain with a minor blockage

For a shallow, accessible blockage, clear the pit first. Lift the grate carefully with a suitable hook or flat tool, keeping fingers clear of pinch points. Remove silt, leaves, stones and rubbish from the base of the pit. A wet-and-dry vacuum can be helpful for small amounts of sediment, provided it is used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Once the pit is clear, flush the line with a hose. Feed the hose only a short distance into the outlet pipe and use normal mains pressure. The aim is to move loose silt towards the discharge point, not to force a compacted blockage deeper into the system or dislodge a damaged fitting.

A hand drain rod may assist where the pipe is straight, accessible and the blockage is close to the pit. Work slowly and avoid aggressive twisting. Stormwater pipes can be PVC, older earthenware or other materials, and excess force can crack a pipe, separate a joint or damage a bend. Never use a sharp metal object that could puncture the pipe.

After clearing the line, run water for several minutes and check that it is flowing freely from the pit. Refit the grate securely. A loose or damaged grate is a trip hazard and can allow larger debris into the system.

Do not use drain chemicals or high-pressure equipment blindly

Chemical drain cleaners are not a good solution for stormwater drains. They rarely break down the usual causes of a blockage, such as leaves, compacted soil or tree roots. They can also harm garden areas, create hazards for anyone working on the drain later and damage some pipe materials.

High-pressure water jetting is effective when used by an experienced drainage professional, but it is not simply a stronger garden hose. A jetter can expose cracked pipes, push debris into a more difficult location or cause water to escape through failed joints if the line is already compromised. The right nozzle, pressure and direction of cleaning depend on the pipe condition and the nature of the blockage.

Avoid putting your hand or arm into a stormwater pipe. Apart from sharp objects and contaminated water, the pipe may contain a sudden obstruction or have an unstable fitting. If debris cannot be reached safely from the pit, it is time to stop rather than make the problem worse.

Signs the blockage needs a drainage specialist

Some stormwater drain blockages are not maintenance issues. Tree roots can enter joints and grow through pipes. Ground movement, vehicle loads and age can crack, flatten or misalign underground pipework. On building sites, concrete slurry, soil and construction waste can harden inside stormwater lines and require specialised removal.

Arrange professional help if you notice repeated flooding, slow drainage after every clean-out, water appearing from unexpected locations, sinkholes, bad pipe movement or visible broken sections. You should also call a qualified drainage professional if the blockage is beyond the first pit, affects multiple inlets, occurs during active heavy rainfall or is near the building foundation.

A drainage team can inspect the pipe with a CCTV camera to identify the exact cause and location. This avoids unnecessary excavation and helps determine whether the line needs cleaning, root cutting, repair, relining or replacement. For commercial sites, schools, body corporates and rural properties with larger catchments, this diagnostic approach is especially valuable because a blocked line can affect access, operations and site safety.

If there is a suspected issue in a council-owned drain, kerb outlet or street infrastructure, do not attempt a repair yourself. Keep the area clear and contact the relevant local authority or a drainage professional who can help establish where private responsibility ends.

Keep stormwater drains clear before the next downpour

Prevention is usually less costly than emergency drainage work. Clear roof gutters and downpipes regularly, especially after strong winds, autumn leaf fall or nearby building work. Trees overhanging roofs and driveways deserve particular attention, as fine leaf matter can build up in pits even when grates appear clear.

Check driveway and channel-drain grates after mowing, gardening or washing down outdoor areas. Grass clippings, mulch, loose gravel and soil are common causes of blockages. Never sweep these materials into a drain. They do not disappear – they settle in pits and pipes until water flow is restricted.

For properties with large trees, sloping blocks, extensive paving or a history of water ponding, scheduled stormwater maintenance is worthwhile. This may include pit cleaning, drain inspections and checking that downpipes discharge correctly. A small issue found in dry weather is far easier to deal with than a flooded entry during a storm.

When fast support matters

If water is rising around your home or building, move valuables away from affected areas where it is safe to do so, keep people clear of open pits and avoid driving through pooled water. Do not remove covers or attempt complex drain work in dangerous conditions. Take photos once safe, as they can help identify where the water is coming from and support any future repair assessment.
