A tap that drips once every few seconds may seem minor, but the sound gets old quickly and the wasted water adds up. Knowing how to stop tap dripping starts with identifying the type of tap and the point where the water is escaping. Some repairs are straightforward, while others point to a worn valve, damaged tap seat or a broader pressure issue that needs qualified attention.

Before pulling a tap apart, take a close look at when and where it leaks. A drip from the spout after the tap is turned off is different from water appearing around the handle, under the sink or at the base of the fitting. That detail makes the repair more accurate and helps avoid replacing parts that were never the problem.

Why a dripping tap should not be ignored

A slow drip can waste a surprising amount of water over time, particularly if more than one tap is affected. It can also leave mineral marks in a basin, stain a stainless-steel sink and contribute to moisture damage in a vanity or cupboard below.

More importantly, a dripping tap is often a sign that a working component has reached the end of its service life. Traditional compression taps rely on a rubber washer to seal against a metal seat. Mixer taps and quarter-turn taps generally use ceramic cartridges, O-rings and seals. Each design fails differently, so a repair that works perfectly on one fitting may not suit another.

How to stop tap dripping: identify the tap first

The simplest way to narrow down the fault is to identify the tap style. You do not need to know the manufacturer before starting, but recognising the basic mechanism is useful.

A conventional tap has separate hot and cold handles that need several turns to open or close. Inside is a spindle and a rubber washer. When the washer wears, hardens or splits, water can pass through the outlet even when the handle is firmly closed.

A quarter-turn tap looks similar but opens with roughly a quarter rotation. These commonly contain ceramic disc assemblies rather than standard washers. A mixer tap has one lever controlling both flow and temperature, and normally uses a cartridge. Replacing a washer in a ceramic or mixer tap will not solve the issue, so avoid forcing parts or guessing at the repair.

The leak location matters too. Water from the spout usually means the internal sealing component is not closing properly. Water around the handle often points to an O-ring, spindle seal or cartridge seal. Water collecting beneath the sink could indicate a loose flexi hose, failed connection or damaged pipework rather than the tap itself.

Prepare properly before removing parts

Turn off the water supply before dismantling a tap. For a basin, kitchen or laundry tap, there may be individual isolation valves under the sink. Turn them clockwise, then open the tap to confirm the water has stopped and to release pressure. If there are no local valves, you may need to isolate the home’s main water supply.

Put the plug in the basin or cover the waste with a cloth. Small screws, clips and washers can disappear down the drain in seconds. Place a towel in the basin to protect the surface and keep a small container nearby for removed parts.

For most basic repairs, you will need an adjustable spanner, suitable screwdriver, long-nose pliers, a clean rag and replacement parts matched to the tap. A tap spanner can also help with recessed fittings. Avoid using excessive force on chrome surfaces. Wrap the fitting with a cloth before using a spanner to reduce the chance of scratching it.

Take a photo at each stage as you disassemble the tap. It is a practical reference if a clip, spacer or washer needs to go back in a particular order. If the tap is old, corroded or seized, stop before damaging the body or connected pipework.

Repairing a conventional washer tap

On a standard compression tap, start by removing the handle. The retaining screw may sit beneath a decorative cap marked hot or cold, or under the handle itself. Lift off the handle to expose the spindle assembly.

Use a spanner to carefully remove the spindle from the tap body. At the bottom of the spindle is the jumper valve and washer that seals the water flow. Check whether the washer is flattened, cracked, uneven or hardened. Replace it with a washer of the same size and type. A poorly matched washer may still allow the tap to drip.

Inspect the jumper valve as well. If it is worn, damaged or sticking, replace it rather than fitting only a new washer. Clean away any loose debris from the tap body, then reassemble the parts in reverse order.

Before turning the water back on, do not overtighten the spindle. Closing a tap too firmly is one of the common reasons washers deform prematurely. Restore the supply slowly, check for leaks around the handle and test the tap. It should shut off cleanly without requiring force.

When the tap seat is the real problem

If a new washer does not stop the drip, the metal seat inside the tap body may be pitted, rough or damaged. The washer cannot form a watertight seal against an uneven surface, no matter how new it is.

Some seats can be resurfaced with the correct specialist tool, while others need replacement. This is a point where calling a plumber is often the sensible option. Incorrectly resurfacing a seat can damage the tap body and turn a small maintenance job into a tap replacement.

Repairing ceramic and mixer taps

Ceramic disc taps and mixer taps need a more precise approach. Once the handle and cover are removed, the cartridge or ceramic headwork can usually be taken out. The replacement must match the fitting exactly, including its length, spline pattern, orientation and connection type.

Take the old cartridge or headwork to a plumbing supplier if you are sourcing a replacement yourself. Similar-looking parts can have small differences that prevent proper sealing. Check the cartridge housing for grit, scale or damaged seals before fitting the new component.

A mixer tap leaking from the spout may need a new cartridge. One leaking around the lever may need O-rings, seals or a cartridge replacement. In some cases, especially with older or low-quality fittings, replacement of the full tap can be more reliable and cost-effective than repeated repairs.

Do not use thread tape on parts that seal with washers or O-rings. Tape is for threaded pipe connections and can interfere with the fit of tap components. A small amount of approved silicone-based plumber’s grease may be suitable for O-rings, but petroleum-based products can damage rubber seals.

When to call a qualified plumber

A homeowner can often replace an accessible washer or cartridge, but not every dripping tap is a DIY repair. Call a qualified plumber if the tap body is cracked, the spindle is seized, the seat is damaged, or water continues to leak after the internal parts have been replaced.

Professional help is also worthwhile when there is water under cabinetry, swelling in timber, rust on fittings, poor water pressure or several taps dripping around the property. Those signs can indicate high water pressure, sediment issues, worn plumbing components or a fault beyond the tap itself.
