A jug filter may improve the taste of a few glasses of water, but it does not suit a busy kitchen where drinking water, cooking and filling bottles all happen at the tap. This under sink water filter review focuses on what makes a real difference: the quality of your incoming water, the contaminants you want to reduce, available cupboard space and the ongoing servicing the system requires.

An under sink system is fitted inside the kitchen cabinet and usually supplies filtered water through a separate small tap or a dedicated mixer tap. It keeps the benchtop clear and can provide a higher filtered-water volume than a bench or jug filter. The right choice, however, is not always the system with the most filter stages or the biggest claims on the box.

What an under sink filter can and cannot do

Most under sink filters are designed to improve drinking water quality rather than make any water source safe. Carbon filtration is widely used to reduce chlorine taste and odour, along with certain sediments and organic compounds. This can be particularly useful where treated mains water has a noticeable chlorine smell or where water has picked up taste from older household pipework.

Other systems include sediment pre-filters, specialised media for selected metals, ultraviolet treatment or reverse osmosis membranes. These serve different purposes. A sediment filter protects the finer cartridge from grit and rust particles. UV treatment can help manage microbiological risk in suitable private-water applications, while reverse osmosis can reduce a broader range of dissolved substances.

That does not mean every household needs the most complex option. Reverse osmosis systems can use more water, take up more room and may reduce flow. They can be a sensible response to a confirmed water-quality concern, but are often unnecessary where municipally supplied water is already safe and the main goal is better taste.

For rainwater, bore water or other private supplies, start with water testing and an assessment of the full supply setup. Filtration needs may involve tanks, pumps, first-flush diversion, sediment control and disinfection, not simply a cartridge beneath the sink. Treating the tap at the end of the line will not correct issues elsewhere in the system.

The trade-off is that the tap itself is more specialised, and future servicing should account for the filter connections as well as the mixer.

Your household habits should guide the decision. If filtered water is mainly for drinking, a separate tap is often straightforward and economical. If you want a cleaner benchtop look and prefer one central fixture, a suitable filtered-water mixer may be worthwhile.

Installation is more than connecting two hoses

An under sink filter needs a cold-water take-off, an isolation valve, compatible fittings and a secure location that does not interfere with cupboard use. The system must be installed in line with the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable plumbing requirements. Poorly supported filter housings, overtightened fittings and inaccessible isolation valves are common causes of avoidable leaks and difficult servicing.

Running costs and servicing should shape your choice

The purchase price is only part of the cost of filtered water. Cartridges need replacement at the stated interval, often every six to 12 months depending on the system, water quality and usage. Some high-capacity cartridges last longer by volume, but no cartridge should be left in service indefinitely simply because the water still tastes acceptable.

As filters collect sediment and contaminants, flow can reduce and performance may decline. Delayed replacement can also create hygiene concerns within the housing. Keep a record of the installation date and set a reminder before the expected service date. If your water supply is high in sediment, you may need more frequent pre-filter changes than a household on clear treated mains water.

Ask about the cost and availability of genuine replacement cartridges before committing to a unit. A low-priced filter body is less attractive if replacement consumables are expensive, hard to source or only available through an obscure supplier. For managed properties and commercial kitchens, planned maintenance is often the most reliable approach because filter changes do not get missed between other maintenance tasks.

When an under sink system is not the first fix

If water has suddenly changed colour, has a persistent metallic smell, contains visible particles or has caused a marked loss of pressure, do not assume a filter will solve it. The source could be deteriorating pipework, a hot water system issue, sediment entering the supply, a tank problem or a fault elsewhere on the property.
